Social protection in the United States, as outlined in the Social Security Act of 1965, consists of three overarching services: benefits to workers and their families; health insurance programs (Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program); and other safety net programs that provide aid to individuals and families facing hardship.

Definitions

CalFresh is California’s food stamps (SNAP) program. Medi-Cal is a program that offers free or low-cost health coverage for children and adults with limited income and resources. If you qualify, you can enroll in Medi-Cal year-round. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues. ESL stands for English as a Second Language.
