K-12 education policy and services are administered through the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), hte second-largest school district in the United States, which is overseen by an independently elected Board of Education. Los Angeles County oversees public health and social services programs for the 88 cities within the County, including the City of Los Angeles.
