Sustainable Development Goals - 17 Goals to Transform our World

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Indicator 14.b.1: Progress by countries in the degree of application of a legal/regulatory/policy/institutional framework which recognizes and protects access rights for small-scale fisheries

Not Applicable in the local context

Local governments do not have jurisdiction over marine areas and therefore cannot pass regulations on sustainable fisheries. In California, the tidelands up to 3 nautical miles from shore are managed by the California State Lands Commission. The Territorial Sea, Contiguous Zone and, Exclusive Economic Zone are regulated by the federal government. The Magnuson-Stevens Act is the primary law governing marine fisheries management in U.S. federal waters.
